2.25 Lingfield Elna Bright 2pts each-way AND 1pt win @ 20/1 (Generally, get guaranteed) - E/W 2nd
A really interesting sprint which will tell us a lot about some decent sorts as regards the winter ahead. Mezzotint is the sexy horse, but has been off for a while and generally in sprints I select horses with a recent run, ideally within 30 days. From stall three and four, Even Stevens and Swiss Cross should set a decent tempo and I would hope they'll set off fast. That should set it up for a closer and Elna Bright fits that bill. He has dropped five pounds in the handicap following his two recent efforts, one in a stronger race than this at Kempton where he performed very well back from a break, showing speed and coming home nicely under hands and heels riding, and last time out over one mile here which is a ridiculous trip for a speedball like this. It is of interest that the selection has some interesting speed figures up against this lot, for example the best RPR and Topspeed figure at the track (albeit from 2009). His trainer proved really adept with sprinters over the summer, and as a dual course winner off higher marks (in better contests) I think he merits the utmost respect at 20/1 with the race likely to set up for him today.
2.55 Lingfield Havin A Good Time 5pts win @ 13/2 (Stan James, Betpack.com, guaranteed, 6/1 generally guaranteed)
A progressive filly from the in form Varian stable who looks well drawn in stall three to take a tow into the race from the likes of Six Wives and Moorehouse Lad. Her wins to runs ratio is impressive and I am happy to forgive her last run on fibresand, she perhaps wasn't best draw and was a bit keen early on without much in the way of cover. She has had a couple of weeks rest since then and if all is well, I think she looks the most likely winner here. Anything around 6/1 or better is decent value.
