We hit the crossbar yesterday but our biggest interest returned good each-way money and we called the Aintree Hurdle well enough, pointing out the two who fought out the finish although I did side with The New One.
One bet in particular really appeals to me today, and the card itself looks a cracker.
Non Account Bet: My Tent Or Yours to win @ 4/9 (Generally) - WON
I think My Tent Or Yours will contest the Champion Hurdle next year and probably do well, back on a flat track he should resume winning ways against what look less speedy, inferior horses. In fact, if you're an odds on player I'd say the 4/9 probably represents a shade of value and the selection might go off shorter. Strange things happen at Aintree, though, and there are 4/9 shots running in even less competitive races every day. If you must have an interest keep it simple and have very small stakes on the favourite.
2:30 John Smith´s Mildmay Novices´ Chase Grade 2 Cl1 3m1f
Selection: Rocky Creek 4pts win @ 11/4 (Bet 365, William Hill, guaranteed, 5/2 generally guaranteed)
Rocky Creek has done nothing wrong on his last three starts and skipped Cheltenham to run here. He appeals far more than Dynaste who had a hard race at Cheltenham and represents a stable whose fortunes have suffered a downturn. I pointed out yesterday that Boylesports seem to have a line on these Nicholls horses and it is interesting they duck him completely offering just 2/1. The selection holds Dynaste on a tentative line through Harry Topper and Benefficient and makes plenty of appeal at anything around 5/2 or better.
3:05 John Smith´s Melling Chase Grade 1 Cl1 2m4f
Non Account Bet: 3 x straight forecasts: 6 to beat 2,4,5.
A race to watch and enjoy. Sprinter Sacre should win, but I think there might be a surprise for second place given Cue Card had a tough race at Aintree and Flemenstar has never travelled abroad and recently received treatment for a lung infection. Neither have had an ideal prep and throw into the mix that they might be chasing Sprinter Sacre, and there is every possibility of a minor shock for the places. My suggestion would be to split your stake three ways, taking Sprinter Sacre to beat each of the three outsiders - only if you really must have an interest.
3:40 John Smith´s Topham Chase Handicap (Grade 3) Cl1 2m5f110y
Selection: Tartak 1pt each-way AND 1pt win @ 14/1 (Generally, get guaranteed)
Jumped really well over these fences last year until he burst a blood vessel and made a mistake costing him any chance. It is hard to know which happened first, but the selection has since changed hands and gone to Tim Vaughan's stable, an outfit who target this meeting. The selection ran a really pleasing race at Cheltenham last time, and it is worth nothing he has dropped 23lb in the handicap in the past year since he ran here last, leaving him very attractively weighted for a horse who has plenty of class about him. His jockey Dougie Costello has a really good record at Aintree in chases, 6/27 22% returning an l.s.p. of + 24.00 over the last five seasons. That doesn't count for much over these fences, but it does suggest he has a feel for the place and for me that's always a bonus.
4:15 John Smith´s Sefton Novices´ Hurdle Grade 1 Cl1 3m110y
Selection: Master Of The Sea 2pts each-way @ 7/1 (Bet 365, Boylesports, guaranteed, 6/1 generally guaranteed)
Nigel Twiston Davies has a really good record in this race and I think his Master Of The Sea can upset the favourite, who may not go on the ground. The selection ran really well at Cheltenham behind Medinas (a key form horse as my next write up will refer to) and looks an out and out stayer in the making. A marathon trip around here will suit him ideally and I think he remains overpriced at 6/1 or better.
4:50 John Smith´s Daily Mirror Punters Club Handicap Hurdle (Listed Race) Cl1 2m4f
Selection: Peckhamecho 3pts each-way AND 1pt win @ 25/1 (Generally, get guaranteed)
Rebecca Curtis, trainer: "I think he'll run well. He was second to Medinas in the Welsh Champion Hurdle but I don't think he liked the ground at Ffos Las. He should be happier on what we get at Aintree."
I have to say I could not believe the price of Peckhamecho this morning, and although he may not win I make him the most overpriced horse I've seen this year so far. I chalked him up as an 11/1 shot and I am at a loss to explain quotes as big as 28/1. One of my biggest regrets of Cheltenham was not backing Medinas in the Coral Cup, I had identified the Welsh Champion Hurdle as a particularly strong renewal, and wanted to follow anything that came out of the race. No only did Peckhamecho finish a close second to Medinas there, he had him well and truly goosed inside the final furlong and just tired on ground that was too heavy for him. He has since disappointed in a Novice Chase but I'm quite sure hurdles are his game and he looks really well handicapped off just 7lb higher than that run. His form would tie in favourably with that of Meister Eckhart who is generally 8/1 here, and the bonus for me is that our horse skipped Cheltenham and seems best on a flat left handed track. Not only that, but being by Beneficial and looking at his action and the trainer's comments elsewhere, he is likely to be better on this faster ground. I've had a decent each-way bet at a price which is simply far too big.
5:25 John Smith´s Mares´ Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race (Listed Race) Cl1 2m1f
Non account bet: Be My Present each-way
No real interest in this mares bumper but if you must have a bet, I've noticed Be My Present doing better than her finishing position suggests on a few occasions and she is worth each-way support.
