Saturday 31st May 2014

Another good day at the office yesterday.

A busy end to the month today with four races of interest for us.

2.40 Haydock Here Comes When 5pts win @ 6/1 (Generally guaranteed)

I don't see much point in complicating this race having looked at the contenders. Here Comes When will handle the track, trip and ground no problem, he looks progressive, is in the best form we've seen him in at any point, and is drawn in stall 1 which is perfect for him to attack. I would expect Jim Crowley to try and make all, using the selection's stamina for a mile over this seven furlong trip. Haydock takes some getting in these conditions but front runners often don't come back to the field. There is a slight question mark given that seven furlongs tends to be a specialist trip, but the selection has plenty of speed and I think the price of 6/1 is very fair.

2.50 York

Racy 1pt each-way AND 1pt win @ 16/1 (Bet 365, Totesport, Betfred, Bet Victor, Ladbrokes, guaranteed)
Secret Witness 1pt each-way AND 1pt win @ 14/1 (Bet 365, Ladbrokes, guaranteed, 12/1 generally guaranteed)

This is a very tight sprint, and might come down to jockeyship at the end of the fast five furlongs. Freddie Tylicki and Ben Curtis are two of the most talented pilots in this field in my view, and both have been riding at the top of their games just lately. Tylicki takes the mount on Racy, who doesn't win often but gets what I think are his ideal conditions in York's five furlongs with a little cut in the ground. He won on May 30th last year after a break of a few weeks, and has had a similar prep today. He looks sure to run a big race and 16/1 is too big.

Secret Witness ran ok at the last York meeting at his second attempt, as is his want. He still looked a bit short of his best but Ron Harris' horses have been running better in recent days and I like the booking of Curtis. Track trip and ground are fine and 12/1+ looks fair.

3.40 Chester Broadway Ranger 5pts win @ 11/4 (Generally guaranteed)

I don't like the favourite here, and although Broadway Ranger is still a maiden, it wasn't for the want of trying at Doncaster last time out. Connections have taken the trouble of booking the best claimer around for today, and Oisin Murphy rides this track particularly well in my view. I think he'll try to make all from stall two and he looks the value in the race at 11/4.

3.50 Haydock Aeolus 5pts win @ 4/1 (Bet 365, Ladbrokes, www.brucebetting.com, guaranteed, 7/2 generally guaranteed)

Aeolus is forgiven his run last time on account of fast ground he patently failed to handle. He will enjoy the softer Haydock surface today and his previous run in the free handicap was very promising in my view. Richard Hughes is booked to ride and anything 7/2+ looks too big.
