Friday 22nd August 2014

Bronze Angel ran well to pick up each-way money yesterday. One selection for today.

3.40 York Hot Streak 6pts win @ 15/2 (Bet Victor, 7/1 generally)

The Nunthorpe is an unusual race for a sprint. It throws up apparently strange results in my opinion because track form and recent form aren't as important as with most sprints. It's all about getting into a rhythm quickly, raw speed, and the ability to keep that speed up for the five furlongs. Younger horses have a good record and Hot Streak ticks a lot of boxes. He is adaptable with regard to ground, and the forecast rain (heavy showers) will present no problems. He has the requisite speed, has the class, and has achieved plenty already in his three year old season. His Haydock win was impressive, but his ability to travel best in the Newmarket contest won by Sole Power on his seasonal debut really marked him down as a sprinter to follow. His York for seals the deal, and although I was tempted to tackle the mile and a half handicap that opens the card, the 7/1+ is tempting enough to have a decent stake on him instead - he looks the bet of the card by some way. Sole Power is respected but it was a long time ago that he won this unique race and he seems better suited by Ascot these days.
